<21>VFCU & Los Fresnos High School working together
The first student-run branch of Valley Federal Credit Union (VFCU) is located at Los Fresnos High School. This project was started by VFCU in 2004 as a way to give back to the community and help educate our youth.
The branch at Los Fresnos High School functions as a complete working branch of VFCU, except with one main difference:
- It is open only to students and staff
This VFCU branch shows students first-hand about the importance of efficient financial practices and transactions. VFCU encourages graduating student tellers to assume full-time positions at our main branch, as well. We also highly encourage other students, faculty and staff members to open accounts and practice taking care of their financial needs.
The “Falcon Branch” is an operating branch of VFCU. It is open to students, faculty, and staff. The Falcon Branch teaches students firsthand about the importance of responsible financial practices. We are now approaching our 8th school year; we encourage our teller-students, and are proud to have added on the students’ employed there to continue on with VFCU. We have been very fortunate to have students transfer to other departments as well as further their education. Our staff, along with the student- tellers, has given classroom presentations and encourages students and faculty to open accounts with VFCU.
Harlingen Summer Expo
Our VFCU table display reflects the new year’s theme with giveaways as well as staff dressing in costumes. We look forward to this event and enjoy seeing old friends and making new contacts.
Brownsville Summer Expo
Every year we put together a display full of color and “style”. We distribute important information and useful, “fun”, and creative tools to keep VFCU in focus.
Valley Regional Medical Center Health Fairs
We partnered with VRMC and went to 5 locations in Brownsville and met staff from different businesses and gave out information about our services, and promotions.
Hanna Golf Tournament
We gave some nice giveaways to the players who participated and donated a nice prize for a raffle. VFCU additionally sponsored a team of players to represent Valley federal.
Stock Market Game
Certain Brownsville schools participate in the Stock Market Game, a program which helps students get involved and learn about the buying and selling of commodities (stock). Throughout the fiscal year, students buy and sell certain stocks in hopes of making successful trades. At the end of the year, VFCU hosts an Award Brunch at our main office in Brownsville recognizing the students’ success by awarding trophies and certificates.
Roar by the Shore
South Padre Islands’ Annual Bike Fest- going on our 6th year we set up our table display with “special themed”, tools to create an exciting energy for members as well as valley visitors. This event allows us to make the ultimate “PR”, for motorcycle loans and other products and services. We have become a favorite with our local members as well as colorful visitors.
Brownsville Community Health Center
We have partnered with BCHC for their Annual School Supply drive. We donate a “gift”, and distribute school supplies and other giveaways.
